Spot a Champion & Enjoy the Jockey Olympics in aid of the GOAL Haiti Appeal at Naas -paddypower.com Cheltenham Trial day on Sunday the 21st of February-

 

Naas Racecourse & Horse Racing Ireland will stage a novel event during the annual paddypower.com Cheltenham Trial day on Sunday the 21st of February. During the afternoon three teams of jockeys captained by Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty and Paul Carberry will compete in the Jockey’s Olympics in aid of the GOAL Haiti appeal. MC for the afternoon will be Hector O’hEochagain, while Gerry Loftus of Superstars fame will be the special guest referee. The competition will incorporate four events, a slow bicycle race, an egg and spoons race, a three legged race and the final event the contestants’ football skills will be tested when they will be requires kicking a football through a tyre to score points for their team. GOAL will have a bucket collection on the day to raise fund for Haiti.

 

GOAL is on the ground in Haiti delivering aid to thousands of people most affected by the recent earthquake. They had a presence in Port-au-Prince within 26 hours of the disaster and currently have more than 30 experienced members of staff working in the disaster zone. Many of the GOAL team, which consists of doctors, nurses, engineers and logisticians, have worked in crisis situations across the Developing World in the past, such as the tsunami in South-East Asia in 2004 and the earthquake in Pakistan in 2005. GOAL is now one of the biggest distributors of food and non-food items in Port-au-Prince and surrounding countryside and has delivered aid to thousands of people to date. They have provided a medical team and supplies to alleviate the suffering of survivors at the central hospital in the capital. GOAL is also working closely with the UN and the US Government and plan to support 250,000 people over the coming weeks and months.

 

GOAL CEO, John O’Shea commented, “On behalf of everyone in GOAL, I would like to express my gratitude to Horse Racing Ireland, Naas Racecourse, Paddy Power and all the jockeys who intend to participate in this event to support our relief and rehabilitation efforts in Haiti.  Events like these not only help GOAL to deliver as much aid to the survivors as possible, but they ensure that their plight remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds”.

 

On the racing front, the paddypower.com Cheltenham Trial Day is one of the key fixtures in the racing calendar. Last years meeting produced three Grade 1 winners, Go Native the current favorite for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham was an impressive winner of the Supreme Novices hurdle last year, three weeks after his victory at Naas. Joncol was also a winner at last years Cheltenham Trial Day; he has subsequently won two Grade 1 Chases, including the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown last Sunday.  An Cathaoir Mor completed the hat trick for Naas when he won the Grade 1 Arkle Chase also at Leopardstown. The Naas meeting on the 21st of February is the last recognized Cheltenham Trials Day in Ireland and the 2010 renewal promises to be another outstanding success. Naas Racecourse’s admission bundle continues to be on offer to patrons, every race goer that pays the full admission of €15 will receive a free €5 refreshment voucher and a free €5 betting voucher. The betting voucher can be used to bet with the rails bookmakers. U-18’s and current student card holders can also avail of free admission. College students are reminded that they must produce a valid student card to obtain free entry.

The first race off at 2.20pm. The Jockey Olympics will take place in the parade ring into two sessions, after the 2nd race and after the 4th race.
